Commissions CAN be Fun!

My very sweet friend Heidi wanted me to paint something colorful and modern. This is her with her daughters Ashton and Bailey at Ashton’s wedding. I loved Heidi’s floral dress so much! It was so fun to paint. She wanted it very bright, no faces (to match other artwork she has) but she also wanted it to be bold like her main piece in her living area. Here’s how it came out :

I love it because I would’ve never chosen these colors in 1 million years, but it just works with her other stuff in her house. She knew what she wanted and she was right!

These are the two other pieces that it will be tying in with. I started to do a white minimal background like the first picture that she showed me that she has but then I realized it wouldn’t be mine if I did that I like color and she likes color so I didn’t wanna replicate somebody else’s artwork I wanted it to be my own, but still do what she asked me to do.

I love that she’s into the loose unpolished look- I really like that. I can’t stand perfect lines - it just doesn’t read traditional art to me. It looks more like something. It looks like did on a computer or AI or something- it just doesn’t look natural. I can kind of get the perfection like on an oil painting or obviously sketch art but I really like watercolor loose and playful.

Yesterday when we went through the art museum in Pensacola, I realized how hard I am on myself about critiquing the littlest things. Some of the sloppiest, craziest art is so beautiful and there’s nothing perfect about it. It just is what it is and it’s someone’s finished piece and I love that.

I think I got confused for a little while- for one thing, people like to say a lot of stuff that they don’t really have a right to say and it starts to make you questioning yourself but so long as you’re doing something- enjoy it. Lots of people aren’t really doing anything but running their mouths!

And as long as people are paying for your art, you’re doing something right!
