Still Life/Practice

I also meant to mention in my last post that I’ve been doing a little more still-life sketching lately. I’ve only done one so far that I felt good enough about to actually turn into a painting, and it was the one with the matchbooks. I really like how it came out, and I think I’m going to push myself to do more of that.
I may even ask my friends on Facebook to start naming random objects for me to draw. I kind of like having that little bit of pressure and not always choosing the easiest thing for myself.
I also feel like you learn a lot of technique from doing still lifes because they aren’t quite as expressive or interpretive. An object is an object. You have to pay attention to shape, proportion, shadows, texture, and all those little details that you can sometimes get away with bending in more whimsical work. I think it would be really good practice for me, and honestly, I like the challenge.
