Checking In!

So far, it has been an extremely boring Thursday. I think these kids were excited about missing school until they realized staying home wasn't exactly going to be a vacation. We've had them helping us get ready for the hurricane, and I'm pretty sure they're ready to file a complaint.

Gary deserves a medal. That poor man got called into work around 11 last night to help shut down some systems, worked until 6:30 this morning, and then came home to approximately 47 other things that needed doing. Phone calls, errands, business stuff, personal stuff. Just stuff. SO MUCH STUFF.

I'm fried. Absolutely done.

I told Gary I was going to take a nap, and he asked if I wanted him to wake me up in an hour. Sir, absolutely not. Do not put a time limit on my unconsciousness. I'll get up when I get up. 😂

Of course, I'll probably sleep an hour anyway. I'm one of those people who sleeps six or seven hours at night and calls it a full night's rest. If I sleep eight hours, somebody better check on me.

In other exciting news, I've started drinking coffee again! Decaf, obviously. The pumpkin spice creamers finally wore me down. I found a sugar-free one, and now I'm sitting here enjoying my coffee right before a nap. That's the beauty of decaf. All the cozy, none of the consequences.

Everybody and their mama has been checking on us today. Gary's phone has practically needed its own secretary. Yes, we're staying home. We've evacuated exactly once, and that little adventure was enough for a lifetime. We headed toward Mobile, Alabama, and what should have been a fairly short drive took us 18 hours in evacuation traffic. Then, because apparently the hurricane didn't get the memo that we were trying to get away from it, the storm changed course and came right through where we were staying. 😂

We ended up spending six nights in a hotel, only to come home and discover we'd been without electricity the entire time. Then we spent another week without power. So much for our brilliant escape plan.

That experience certainly taught us how unpredictable hurricanes can be. Sometimes you think you're getting out of the way and end up right back in the middle of it. We're prepared, and now we wait.

The real challenge will be entertaining these children all weekend. We bought more board games yesterday, but I'm not sure they're going to be impressed. Harper will be fine. Give that child some slime, clay, beads, and permission to make a mess, and she's in paradise.

Gage, however, would much rather be outside with his friends, riding bikes or playing guitar. He may actually be counting the hours until school reopens. 😂 He was so disappointed when we got the call last night that school was canceled because today is his girlfriend's birthday! He already gave her the cross necklace we got her, but he had a little box of birthday chocolates and a few other goodies ready to give her today. Bless his sweet heart, you should've seen his face. 🤍

She doesn't have a phone right now, so he can't even call her. They're supposed to get online together this weekend, but if the power goes out, that may not happen either. Poor little guy. Being 13 and in love is hard enough without a hurricane interfering. 😂🤍

Anyway, we're going to make the best of it. I'll probably check in throughout the weekend, but right now I've got pumpkin spice coffee to finish and a nap with absolutely no scheduled ending.

Hope everybody has an awesome Thursday! We’re gonna!!  ❤️
